Tavern is a bit like the Hummer of restaurants—showy, too expensive and a so-called remodeled classic that’s really just a clunky novelty beneath its shiny veneer. No amount of murals, over-the-top topiaries or twinkling lights can disguise what can often be an uneven dining experience amid mobs of tourists. That said, there will always be hordes of visitors revving up their credit cards to enjoy pricey classics such as lobster bisque and prime rib just for the privilege of eating in beautiful Central Park near the urban-yet-bucolic Sheep Meadow.
